Turangi has many interesting outdoor activities, and it is in the central North Island with mountains, rivers, Lake Taupo nearby, but we were just passing through and for us it was a place to break the long journey, rather than a destination in itself.

It's a great stopover location say between Auckland and Wellington but it's hard to find good food and the prices e.g. food and petrol reflect a lack of true competition and a feeling "well, you've got little choice"

A comfortable apartment with great views over Lake Taupo.
A comfortable apartment with great views over Lake Taupo. We stayed two nights and used it as our base for doing the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, so it was perfect for that. Oreti Resort is about 14km from Turangi, so you definitely need a car for eating out etc.

We found plenty to do in our 3 day stay.
We found plenty to do in our 3 day stay. We popped up to Taupo and went to Orakei korako. Then to beautiful lake Rotopounamu and walked around that. And did the picturesque river walk. We hired a rental car so we could look around easily. We could have easily filled in a whole week.

Central to some wonderful activities such as great rafting, the walk Tongariro crossing, Ruapehu. 'Up market' accommodation is very limited but if you can get into the Tongariro Lodge, it is excellent. Worth the extra cost. The locals are helpful and the town has a nice relaxed non-touristy feel; however avoid leaving your car parked overnight on a street. Shopping, apart from Groceries is limited.

Turangi is a lovely little town.
Turangi is a lovely little town. Not much going on in the actual town itself but has everything you need in terms of supermarkets etc. and easy access to the Tongariro Crossing and lots of other beautiful walks nearby. Recommend the Tongariro River Walk and Lake Rotopounamu walk too. Lovely swimming spots! I stayed for 4 nights in the end which was great. Recommend staying here! And also use Panda Shuttles to get to the Tongariro crossing or anywhere in the local area. Stay at Riverstone Lodge if you can!
The unit was very clean and tidy. The bed mattress comfortable.Facilities available were good. The motel is close to Turangi shopping area and the Golden Crust pizza place is over the road for a quick meal. The spa pools and games room are available at various times. There is a mini golf course also.DVD s are available.Hot water was always there when needed. There is a carpet sweeper and clothes rack which is handy.
The chalet was comfortable and clean, the staff was friendly and the internet worked well. On our 2nd day there we headed to Tongariro Alpine Crossing and the lodge prepared breakfast and packed lunch for us the day before - so it was easy for us to get organized at 5am in the morning of the trip!
Make sure to book time for dinner in advance as it can get fully booked fast.
I wanted an economical weekend trip over Waitangi weekend and this motel was ideal because it was very good value, half the price of similar motels in Taupo, yet only 45 minutes drive from Turangi to Taupo. It's a great central location. The staff at the motel were friendly and the accommodation was spacious and warm.
Beautiful, clean and secure apartments with enough space for our children and us :).
Bonus game room amenities and mini putt for the kids. Felt like a luxurious holiday park vibe with all the extras on offer. Staff were super lovely and helpful. We will definitely be back.
This motel is a wee gem close to Turangi. From the outside it looks old, but as soon as you open the room door it is lovely clean facilities with modern decor. The hot pools are a bonus (no extra cost) and open 24/7. Certainly loved our stay and will call again.
Great views across Lake Taupo and in a secluded quiet location. There were good restaurants nearby (we especially liked Valentino's in Turangi) and wonderful walks all around (the walk around Lake Rotoaira is short but picturesque).
The location is superb. The hot pools came in handy after a cold day in the ice and more importantly the children playground and the animal zoo were really a plus for a family friendly hotel.
great set up for our extended family. great location, close to turangi, Mt Ruapehu and Taupo but also just perfect if you don’t feel like going anywhere because it has everything you need.
Great location, close to Turangi shops and not far from Taupo city centre.. enjoyed our stay, Tony is friendly, funny, and a great down to earth host.. definitely a place to recommend 👌
We have a wonderful and relaxing stay in Turangi bridge motel! Rooms are all relaxing and so clean as well as the whole place... will definitely come back here! Very recommendable!
